Hamilton's Highlights
Dear Neighbor,
Welcome to my newsletter! Below, you’ll find updates on my work representing House District 87—both in the community and on key policy issues—in recent weeks.
As always, feel free to contact my office at h87@iga.in.gov with any questions or concerns.
In service,
Legislative Council
This week, the Legislative Council met to approve summer study committee topics for the 2025 interim. These are the issues lawmakers will examine in preparation for the 2026 legislative session.
Roughly 90 topics were requested, but most of those requests — submitted via letter — aren’t published publicly. I urged the Council to make all study topic requests available online. That’s a basic step toward transparency and good government. Unfortunately, I don’t expect the majority to act on this, as similar requests have been denied in past years.
I was also surprised and concerned that the Medicaid Oversight Committee wasn’t assigned any study topics. With Indiana already facing major Medicaid cuts — even before potential federal reductions — we should absolutely be having a public, thoughtful conversation about how to continue providing healthcare to our most vulnerable Hoosiers. Shockingly, that conversation isn’t part of the plan.
Letter to the Editor: Pre-K cuts will harm Hoosiers
If you’ve followed my work, you know how passionate I am about early learning. It’s one of the smartest, most cost-effective investments we can make in our state’s future—an investment that pays off many times over. I recently shared my thoughts with the Indianapolis Business Journal in response to the troubling cuts to Indiana’s already limited pre-K program. Click to expand and read the full letter below.
Angels Blessing Foundation Kids Summer Camp visit to the Statehouse
This week, I had the pleasure of meeting a great group of kids from the Angels Blessing Foundation, based in Lawrence. The organization supports immigrant families by offering education, mentorship, consulting and other valuable resources.
The children were visiting the Statehouse as part of the Foundation’s summer camp program, and it was a joy to spend time with them during their field trip.
I’m proud to have organizations like the Angels Blessing Foundation in our community—working every day to help immigrant families build strong, thriving lives here in Indiana.
Faith in Place event at Fort Harrison
Recently, I had the pleasure of joining the Midwest staff of Faith in Place at Fort Harrison State Park for their annual retreat. This inspiring organization brings together people of faith from diverse religious traditions to work on environmental issues and build a more sustainable future. I was honored to speak with them about how to strengthen their impact on public policy and to share some of the progress we've made and challenges we face here in Indiana.
Visiting Coburn Place
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Coburn Place, which offers support for survivors of domestic violence. Coburn Place provides resources such as counseling and child care and is the largest domestic violence housing provider in the state. Finding housing is critical for survivors to be able to get back on their feet and begin to recover from the trauma they have endured. I look forward to the continued partnership between the state and Coburn Place to help survivors and set an example for facilities across Indiana and the nation.
Disclaimer: If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available. You can contact the 24/7 National Domestic Violence Hotline by calling 800-799-7233 or text BEGIN to 88788.
