Dear neighbor
I am writing to share with you my latest attempt to end gerrymandering in Indiana.
Last week, I supported an amendment to create a two year task force that would begin a process to adopt non-partisan redistricting. This amendment was voted down by the Republican Supermajority, failing on a party line vote of 28-67. I issued the following statement after the vote:
“Creating a nonpartisan process to draw maps is one of the most important things we can do to strengthen our democracy. Hoosiers should pick their elected officials, not the other way around. This amendment sought to begin studying a process to take the power to draw electoral maps out of the hands of those who benefit from gerrymandering.
“The current partisan redistricting process is inherently flawed, and a nonpartisan redistricting process would fix that by bringing more competition to Indiana’s legislative races.
“Gerrymandering erodes the power of the people. Allowing a nonpartisan process to draw maps would protect the American promise that every vote matters.”
As always, please reach out to my office if you have any questions, concerns, or wish to comment on legislation moving in the General Assembly.
Sincerely,
Valiant Effort
Thanks so much, Carey, for your stand on this vital issue. Partisan gerrymandering is, by definition, antiidemocratice because it essentially creates an oligarchy where the state is controlled by a powerful few. Those who design and maintain ti should be removed from office.
